Top Offbeat Things to Do in
Hong Kong
Hong Kong has several atypical attractions that tourists can
explore while on a trip to this small former colony. These activities
are offbeat, but you might find they are your most enjoyable and
memorable experiences during your trip to Hong Kong.
Go Organic at Kadoorie Farm
Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Gardens is off the beaten path, near
the China border outside of Fanling. It is an organic farm, animal
preserve, and a place for kids and families to go to see nature and
farmland and eat organic yummies.
Though it is sort of a strangely eclectic place, it isn't a
joke. It is an educational and charitable endeavor of one of Hong
Kong's richest oldest clans that also owns the Peninsula Hotel.
Charter a Boat
Chartering a boat is a cool way to have an inexpensive getaway
with friends or family. Favorite places to go by boat are the beach
areas and bays off of Sai Kung for the great natural beauty, camping,
and surfing; the Hong Kong Geopark areas; and Lamma Island, Lantau
Island, and Cheung Chau Island.
Chum It at Chung King
The Chungking Mansions is a unique experience in the region. It
is a large hotel and apartment complex along the "Golden Mile" of
Nathan Road. Shop for reasonably priced South Asian food in the shops.
You might not like it at all, or you might be fascinated by the
hustle and bustleof the buildings crowded with Chinese couriers,
African merchants, and backpackers. It is as if distinct parts of the
world (Africa, South Asia, China, Europe, America and Australia) mix,
mingle, compete, and jostle there.
Visit the Museum of Teaware in Hong Kong Park
At Flagstaff House Tea Museum you can buy, drink, and
experience fine Chinese teas and receive free instruction on China's
tea culture. The Chinese p orcelain museum inside Flagstaff House,
Hong Kong's oldest surviving British building (1842), has very
valuable Tang Dynasty (618–904) antiques.
Hong Kong Parkalso has one of the world's biggest aviaries
where birds fly around under a net canopy.
Hike Along the Olympic Trail
A favorite walk for local hiking groups is the Olympic Trail
that runs from Tung Chung to Mui Wo across Lantau Island. What is
offbeat about the Olympic Trail is the unusual mix of sea, mountains,
animals, Chinese tombs, and bikers.
