Is travel insurance required?
Applicants who need a short-stay Schengen visa must hold at least €30,000 of medical cover valid across all member states. Visa-exempt visitors are not caught by this visa rule. Read the Schengen guide.
Healthcare and insurance in Poland
Poland is an interesting case on cost. The UK government says that public medical facilities are similar to those in the UK, and that private facilities are less expensive than in the UK. Lower prices don't remove the need for insurance, because a serious illness could still need a long hospital stay and a medical flight home.
In an emergency, telephone 112 and ask for an ambulance. Contact your insurer or assistance company quickly if you're referred to a medical facility.
UK nationals can use a GHIC or EHIC for medically necessary state care. It isn't an alternative to travel insurance, and it doesn't cover additional standard costs, medical repatriation or private care.
Dental and medical trips
Lower private prices have made Poland a popular choice for dental and cosmetic treatment. A standard travel policy generally won't pay for planned treatment or the complications that follow it. If you're traveling for treatment, tell your insurer, and look for specialist cover. Australia's Smartraveller and Canada's government both warn travelers about this kind of gap, and their advice applies well beyond their own citizens.
Schengen and border planning
Poland is in the Schengen Area, so visa applicants must hold at least €30,000 of medical cover. Visa-free visitors have a shared 90-day limit across the area.
Poland shares a border with Ukraine and Belarus, and you should take care if you're planning to continue east. Many governments advise against travel to those countries, and a standard policy may not apply there. Our tracker lists what's been reported about their insurance rules, and you should read your government's current advice about border areas before traveling near them.
What to check for a Poland trip
- Tatra Mountains. Hiking and skiing around Zakopane can need adventure cover, especially for mountain rescue.
- Ticks and insects. Official advice lists biting insects and ticks among health risks. Forests and lake regions are worth particular care.
- City breaks. A stag or hen weekend can raise alcohol exclusions, so it's worth a quick look at your policy.
- Budget flights. Low-cost connections mean a missed flight may not be protected. Check your delay cover, especially if your bookings are separate.
- Theft. Check single-item limits for phones and cameras.

Cover you might already have
- UK residents: a GHIC or EHIC gives access to state healthcare in EU countries on the same terms as residents. It isn't a replacement for insurance. See the UK guide.
Check official travel advice
Government advice covers entry rules, safety and health. Traveling against official advice can also affect your insurance.
Before you buy a policy for this trip
- Confirm that Poland and any stopovers fall within the policy's territory.
- Check that medical and evacuation limits suit how far you'd be from good hospitals and from home.
- Compare your planned activities against the exclusions, including scooters and adventure sports.
- Declare your health conditions accurately.
- Carry a certificate of insurance. See how to read one.
