Travel insurance by type of traveler

The right policy depends on who is traveling as much as where. A retired couple on a cruise and a student backpacking through Asia have very little in common, and their insurance shouldn't either.

Why the traveler matters so much

Insurers price and restrict cover according to risk, so your age, health and plans change what's available. They also change where policies tend to fail. Older travelers more often run into medical declarations and age limits. Backpackers more often run into activity exclusions and rules about buying cover once already abroad. Families need to check how children are counted.

Each guide here focuses on the clauses that matter most for that group, so you can check those first when reading a policy.

Fit in more than one group?

Most people do. If you're a 68-year-old heading off on a cruise, read both guides. Take the stricter requirement in each case, and make sure a single policy meets all of them before you buy.
