How this estimate works

The arithmetic is deliberately simple, so you can check it yourself. Squaremouth, a large US comparison site, reports that comprehensive plans typically cost between 4% and 10% of prepaid, non-refundable trip costs, with a typical plan around 6%. We multiply your trip cost by those three percentages. If you tick cancel for any reason, we add about 40%, a commonly quoted figure for that upgrade.

We have not built a secret pricing model, because we don't have access to insurers' rating tables and would rather not pretend otherwise. Our age notes are directional for the same reason.

Why your real quote may differ

  • Age. Older travelers usually pay more, because medical and cancellation claims become more likely.
  • Home country. These benchmarks come mainly from the US market. Trip-cost percentages can be a poor guide elsewhere, because many policies outside the US are priced mainly on age, destination and trip length rather than trip value.
  • Destination. A trip that includes the United States often costs more to insure, because medical bills there are so high.
  • Plan type. A medical-only policy has no cancellation benefit, so it can cost far less than this estimate. It also protects far less.
